Jamaal Baptiste

Jamaal Baptiste is an Assistant Professor of Jazz at Cal Poly, where he directs the University Jazz Band and teaches courses in jazz. He holds BM and MM degrees in jazz studies and an MA and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Indiana University. As a pianist, Baptiste has performed with artists including Dave Stryker, Lenora Helm Hammonds, and Michael Spiro and contributed to Spiro and Wayne Wallace’s Grammy-nominated album Canto América. He is an original member of the Batuquê Trio, co-founder of the NelBap Duo, and a member of Carlos Bislip’s Aruban Jazz Collective.
