Set in 1916 Yorkshire, Nicholas Hytner’s The Choral follows Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), an uncompromising choirmaster hired to lead a local choral society depleted by World War I. Amidst the loss, he recruits teenagers and veterans to perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. The film examines music’s power to provide community, solace, and resilience during wartime, while exploring themes of class and coming-of-age.
Presented in collaboration with the SLO International Film Festival.
